About Square Roots – British Designer Furniture

Brand Highlights

Every Tree Has a Story

Founded in 2007 by British designers Edward Stoddart and Justin Wheatcroft, SQUARE ROOTS transforms a deep love for nature into inspiring furniture design. The brand embraces the natural form of wood, preserving its organic textures, mineral lines, knots, and natural imperfections rather than treating them as flaws to be removed or concealed.

Following traditional craftsmanship, SQUARE ROOTS creates modern organic furniture with clean lines while skillfully integrating metal elements to highlight the wood’s unique character. Today, the brand is marketed in 18 countries worldwide and is a regular exhibitor at the IFFS Singapore International Furniture Fair.

Eco-Friendly Certification

At its core, SQUARE ROOTS is committed to sustainability and eco-conscious craftsmanship. The French white oak used in its furniture is sourced from the Burgundy Plateau, certified under the PEFC (Program for the Endorsement of Forest Certification). PEFC ensures that all wood is ethically and sustainably harvested, promoting responsible forest management.

The cool climate of the Burgundy Plateau produces oak that is dense, durable, and elegantly light in tone. Compared to other varieties, these trees have stronger trunks and well-developed side branches, resulting in more robust and visually striking grain patterns.

PEFC – Program for the Endorsement of Forest Certification

Established in 1999 by forest management organizations from 11 European countries, PEFC is an independent, non-profit, and non-governmental organization that promotes third-party certification for sustainable forest management. It ensures that both wood and non-wood forest products meet the highest ecological, social, and ethical standards.

PEFC-certified forests cover two-thirds of all certified forest areas worldwide. As of early 2019, this amounts to over 300 million hectares—nearly 86 times the size of Taiwan—providing one of the world’s largest sources of certified fiber and wood materials.
